Panel 2: Based on images from an old farmhouse near Carves in South-West France.

Acrylic, oil, pastel and graphite on wood panel. 60cms x 60cms x 5cms. August 2013

The panel is based on two wall paintings in the main first-floor room of an old farmhouse just outside the village of Carves in Aquitaine, South-West France.

The architecture of the farmhouse (now much restored and available to rent), suggests that it was at least partly fortified originally, the main rooms being on the upper floors and accessible only via an external stone staircase.

The wall paintings, which may have connections with tensions between the Protestant Huguenot community and Catholics during the 17th century, all contain a curious mixture of religious and secular iconography.
