Panel 5: Based on a carving in the quarries at Gebel el - Silsila, Egypt.

Acrylic, oil, pastel and graphite on wood panel. 60cms x 60cms x 5cms. February 2013

Also known as Khenu or Kheny, the quarries at Gebel - el Silsila were the largest in ancient Egypt and provided stone for many of the major building projects, from the 18th Dynasty to Roman times.

Scattered all over the exposed stone workings are a visual reminder of the people who actually created the raw materials for the magnificent structures at Luxor and the city of Armana.

Reminiscent in many ways of the small marks and traces left behind by the medieval craftsmen of Europe, in the construction of thousands of churches and dozens of Cathedrals over the centuries; silent voices in stone reaching out through time, reminding us of the eternal, unanswered 'questions' that man has carried with him since the dawn of time.
